The country which goes by the name of Vanuatu today, used to be known as the New Hebrides. Although this traditional South Pacific island nation stretches over a large area, it has a population of less than 200,000 souls with 105 indigenous languages. It was jointly ruled by the British and the French until independence in 1980.
These 200 vatu notes were first issued in 1995 (P8). A Melanesian Chief standing with a spear dominates the front. The back has a statue celebrating family life to the right, while to the left, we find a traditional parliament in session.
