    Description

    Offered here "
    Among His Souvenirs
," a rare original lithograph of a preliminary painting by Carl Barks, the Disney artist who wrote and drew the great Donald Duck four color comic books throughout the '40s, '50s and 1960s, and invented Uncle Scrooge, the Beagle Boys, Gladstone Gander, Gyro Gearloose and many of the other beloved characters in the Donald Duck universe.
    This litho--
    which measures
    11" high x 9" w
ide overall, with an image area of
    8 3/4" high x 7" wide
--is one of a series of ten lithographs that were created for inclusion in the long out of print fine art portfolio "
A Special Lithographic Suite of Preliminary Paintings by
    Carl Barks
, Set I," which was published in an edition of only 500 copies by Another Rainbow under license from the Walt Disney Company in 1986.
That portfolio, which originally sold for more than 0 back in 1986, included ten lithographs of preliminary paintings by Carl Barks. Each litho in the set features a fine art lithograph of a preliminary painting that Carl created for a proposed full size painting. These preliminary paintings would be submitted to the Walt Disney company for approval.
All lithographs in the portfolio were produced directly from Carl's original paintings, and all are printed on high rag-content paper.
This limited edition artwork offers a beguiling portrait of
Scrooge McDuck, the world's richest duck, as he examines one of his prized possessions: a whopping gold nugget from the Duck's glory days back on the Klondike. As it happens, t
his particular preliminary painting was one of two similar ideas, and both were rejected because Uncle Scrooge strikes a pose that was deemed too close to the position he held in a previous painting, "An Embarrassment of Riches."  As a result, this preliminary litho was abandoned in this early state, and, unlike many of the artist's other preliminary paintings, was not followed up by a corresponding full size rendering. Thus, this litho represents the only published example of this particular Scrooge portrait by Carl Barks.
If you're a Barks completist, here's your chance to add a rare lithograph by the artist to your collection for a fraction of what you'd pay for even one of his small format lithos, most of which were published in greater numbers than the edition of 500 from which this work was published.
I have only one copy of this litho. It is an unframed and never displayed litho that I purchased directly from the estate of Another Rainbow's co-publisher, Russ Cochran.  I am also offering a second lithograph from the same portfolio in a separate eBay auction.  If you purchase both lithos, I will be more than happy to combine ship them in a single carton to reduce your postage costs.
