Description

Antique HOTAKOLD TIN WARE ART MERCURY GLASS THERMOS
An intriguing, antique tin and mercury glass thermos by Hotakold of New York, a manufacturer of metal table wares. The use of a new vacuum technology for flasks became available in 1898. This thermos could have been one of the first to use this technology, perhaps before the Thermos company itself. The art nouveau advertising and use of blown mercury glass suggests this is likely a circa 1900 item
Features a tin and enamel decorated exterior with a blown Mercury glass insulating insert. There is a can shaped lid which could be used for serving and a metal bale and handle which both lock the thermos and allow for easy handling
Measures 12" to top of handle and 4.5" in diameter
Very good condition. Enamel printed advertising is crisp and legible. Loss to green enamel on lid. A couple tiny areas of loss in bottom of glass insert. Antique patina and light rust. Thermos rattles slightly when shaken
